Love it, like it, or hate it, you've likely never seen anything even vaguely like the work of outsider artist Steve Bormes. What started out as an attempt to add visual interest to an old Turkish yogurt churn has grown over the past 10 years into a full-time career in the arts for this self-taught artisan. Utilizing found objects from Turkey and from America, Bormes' work embodies both his childlike sense of aesthetics and his very adult appreciation for the human form.
While Bormes declares his work holds no hidden meaning, critics and jurors from across America seem to find quite a little to discuss in his sometimes surreal, sometimes whimsical creations, calling them "potent and poetic." We'll let you judge for yourself!
