We shopped the bazaars and antique collections of Turkey for many years before finding this beautiful Turkmenistan Blanket Chest. It wasn't because there were none available. They existed. The problem was, they were either falling apart, or so incredibly expensive, we couldn't touch them. Then one day, while strolling down a side street, Steve found an interesting little store. Have you ever been in one of those antique places where things are piled all the way to the ceiling, and you just know there's a treasure there somewhere, but you'll never find it? Well, Steve spent the time to search, and found this chest, along with its companion piece (also shown on the site), buried under more clutter and dust than can be described. He bought it, we shipped it and cleaned it, and now we present it to you!
This “blanket chest” is so named because of its use for textile storage. You will notice it doesn’t have the hinged doors typical of most linen cabinets. While we can’t say definitively, it is our speculation that perhaps such cabinets were created with a sliding door, as hinges would make the piece weak if moved frequently. For nomadic peoples, this would be an important consideration. Perfect for a focal point in a foyer or at the end of a long hall, this lovely piece of history is ready to add visual interest to your home or cabin.
